James Alfred Hart
My work is deeply rooted in an exploration of colour, nature, and place. Over time, my paintings have evolved into a reflection of blurred images—both large and small—that I observe and bring to my canvases. I am fascinated by the idea of distorting landscapes, using the colours that resonate with how I perceive or remember them. Through the manipulation of shapes and the use of gestural lines, I aim to capture moments in time, transforming memories of the past into dynamic visual expressions.
Wandering through time, I reverse it, allowing memories to become my primary inspiration. My process is about the interplay between moment and memory, pace and beauty. I use the movement inherent in landscapes and places as a foundation for my work. For me, movement is an abstraction; it’s the fleeting experience of a place that belongs to you alone in that moment. This transitory experience is what drives me to transform pigment into a painting—a memory made visible for all to see.
Abstraction, to me, is the purest way to depict the past. Colour is my guide, leading me to places across the planet where I observe and store these impressions in my mind. It is through this spiritual connection with colour that my paintings come to life. When you look at a landscape or place, it’s yours for that instant, and I strive to transform that fleeting moment into a lasting memory on canvas. My work is an expression of feelings through colour, often influenced by music that stirs a painting within me. In this way, abstraction becomes the perfect medium to convey the essence of the past, as I paint from the places I remember.
